What do we mean by SHAPE? You and I have been and continue to be, spiritually formed or “SHAPEd” by God. The SHAPE acronym was originally coined by Saddleback pastors Erik Rees and Rick Warren - Purpose Driven Life.
Each of us have unique:
S - Spiritual Gifts
H - Heart (or passions)
A - Abilities
P - Personality
E - Experiences
then we discover our unique SHAPE, we are better able to align ourselves as vital members of the body of Christ. When we are ALIGNED as a body, we are then ACTIVATED by God on purpose and for God’s purposes.

FAQ

What does Bel Air Church believe about the gift of “Tongues”?
There is no official position from the Presbyterian Church (USA) on the matter of “speaking in tongues”. Bel Air Church does not hold an official position either. Although not a common practice for our community to exercise the gift of tongues in public worship, this does not mean that we forbid it. Rather, when it does take place, we ensure that an interpreter is present for the building up of the entire church body (1 Cor. 14:11-13, 26-28).
In the SHAPE assessment, “tongues” is defined as:
• Tongues/Languages – Tongues a miraculous faculty granted by the Holy Spirit to a person, allowing the person to speak multiple languages that the person did not previously know (Acts 2:4-12; 1 Cor. 12-14; Romans 8:26).
• Interpreting Tongues - The gift of interpreting tongues is the miraculous faculty granted by the Holy Spirit to a person, giving them the ability to translate a foreign language into the language of the hearers (1 Cor. 14).
What is “speaking in tongues?”
1. Foreign language (Acts 2:4-12)
a. To proclaim the gospel to all nations
2. Prayer language (1 Corinthians 13:1; 14:2, 4, 14-15, 18; Romans 8:26)
a. Not to be used to bring attention to oneself
3. Praise language (1 Corinthians 14:15-16)
a. Used as a form of praise
4. Interpretation of language previously unknown (1 Corinthians 14:11-13, 26-28)
a. Used to encourage and bless the congregation in a public meeting
b. The Greek word, hermeneia = Gift of interpretation
Key Instructions to the church found in 1 Corinthians 12-14:
• 1 Corinthians 12: Paul lists the various gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit and their role in building up the Church.
• 1 Corinthians 13: Everything must be done in love.
• 1 Corinthians 14: Guidelines for church services that are led and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Like any Spiritual Gift, the gift of “tongues” is:
- Not something we learn, but something empowered by the Holy Spirit.
- Not a gift everyone receives, but a gift given on purpose and for purpose.
- Not “THE” sign or mark of a true believer, but “A” sign, for the power of the Holy Spirit can manifest in many ways, the greatest of these is love (1 Cor. 13)
15 guiding observations as found in 1 Corinthians:
1. One of the manifested gifts of the Holy Spirit (12:10).
2. One gift among multiple gifts and callings (12:28, 30).
3. Tongues of men or angels are useless without love (13:1).
4. Tongues like all imperfect things will cease, but love will never end (13:8).
5. The one who speaks in tongues (without an interpreter) speaks not to men but to God (14:2).
6. He who speaks in the gift of tongues (without an interpreter) edifies himself (14:4).
7. Paul wants us all to speak in tongues, but in church, more to prophecy unless there is interpretation (14:5).
8. The need for interpretation if tongues is used in church (14:6-12).
9. Those who speak in tongues need to pray also for the gift of interpretation (14:13).
10. We are to pray and sing in the Spirit (i.e. in tongues). We are also to pray and sing with our minds, both modes are important (14:15-17).
11. Paul is thankful that he speaks in tongues more than any of the rest of the Corinthians, but in church he would rather speak a language all can understand (14:18-19).
12. Tongues is a sign for unbelievers while prophecy is for believers (14:20-25).
13. There should be order in the worship, Paul suggests two, or at most three, and each in turn; and let one interpret (14: 27).
14. In public worship, if there is no one to interpret the tongues, the gift should not be exercised publicly (14:28).
15. Earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues; but all things should be done decently and in order (14:39-40).
